Title: Local players play big part in Bombers championshi Posted: Tues Aug 04, 2009
By: Michael Best

With the Thomasville Bombers claiming the Great South League

Championship last weekend, General Manager Linda Johnson points out the

impact several local players made on the championship season.

"We had several players from Cairo and Grady County that that were not

only on the roster, but played a big part in our success this season,"

Johnson said.

Former Syrupmakers and Grady Countians Hugh Russell Lee, Jeremy Jones,

Devin Carpenter and Jeremy Crosby, along with former Brookwood Warrior

Drew Johnson all played vital roles on the team. "We wanted to include

as many local players from Cairo and Grady County as possible, and these

young men did a great job for us, unfortunately Jeremy (Crosby) was

unable to be at the tournament because of a school commitment, but

helped us out during the regular season," Johnson said.

According to Johnson, the team's goal is allow local players the

opportunity to play and get exposure at the college level.  "I wish we

could take them all, but space is limited on the roster and sometimes

playing time can be limited, players have to be patient and work get a

spot, however, the playing time, the practice time and exposure to

scouts give our young athletes a chance possibly play at the next level,

we have several sponsors from Grady County, so we support our local

talent and appreciate the local individuals and businesses that make it

possible for our local athletes to play," Johnson added.

The Thomasville Bombers didn't expect to be in the Great South League Tournament, much less win it all. The Bombers appeared to be out of contention for the championship tournament, but won nine of their last eleven games to claim the title.

The Bombers took advantage of getting in the tournament by winning the tournament's opening game against St. Augustine 8-6 last Thursday. Cairo's Drew Johnson had a three homer in the win and former Syrupmaker Hugh Russell Lee was 1-3 in the game. The Bombers advanced to the championship with a 4-3 win on Saturday against the East Alabama Big Train.

The Thomasville squad then claimed the Great South Championship with a 11-9 win over the Big train late Saturday night. The Big Train forced a second game in the championship with a win over the Bombers in game one. The Bombers jumped out on top with 3 runs in the top of 1st. Adam Duncan hit a double, scoring Ruben Rodriquez and Drew Johnson. Tyler Davis had a sacrifice fly scoring Duncan.

The Big Train bounced back scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning. It wasn't until the bottom of 4th, when the Big Train tied the game up, but the Bombers got back on top when Hugh Russell Lee drew a walk & Lance Lozan singled up the middle to move Hugh Russell over to second. Then, Mitchell Herring drew a walk. Hugh Russell then scored on a wild pitch to put theBombers up 4-3.

In the 7th, the Bombers' Johnson single to right, Adam Duncan drew a walk, Tyler Davis drew a walk and Sho Kohata drew a walk, scoring Johnson and the Bombers went up 5-3. However, the Big Train battled back to score four runs and beat the Bombers 7-5.

In the deciding game, the Bombers got off to a slow start with the Big Train jumping out to a 3 run lead in the first and then in the 3rd they went ahead by 6 runs. In the top of 4th, Bombers’ Tyler Davis singled up the middle, and Sho Kohata drew a walk, Hugh Russell Lee hit a double and scored Davis, and Kohata. Bombers still down 6-2.

Down 6-2 in the 5th, the Bombers scored 4 more runs to tie the ball game.

the Big Train answered with three more runs but in the bottom of 7th, Sho Kohata walked, and Hugh Russell hit another double scoring Kohata, tieing the game back up at nine.

In the 8th inning Adam Duncan drew a walk, Tyler Davis hit a double off the back wall of Golden Park and Hugh Russell Lee hit a deep single over the middle, scoring Duncan and Davis, giving the Bombers a 11-9 lead.

In the top of 9, Big Train had one out, with runners on second and third. East Alabama’s then singled over second and right fielder Drew Johnson made a great catch for out number two, Johnson then jumped up and ran to second base to tag the base for the 3rd and final out. With the out the Bombers claimed the title 11-9.

"We were the number nine seed and won the championship, it was amazing, we were able to win nine of our last eleven games," said Manager Linda Johnson. "It was a great feeling, I'm happy for the boys, the bats started swing and the pitching got better every game and we started to gel," said coach Bobby Rodriguez.

THOMASVILLE — The Great South League Championship game didn’t conclude until almost 2 a.m. Sunday.

Instead of feeling fatigued, the Thomasville Bombers were jubilant.

The Bombers captured the league championship with an 11-9 victory against the East Alabama Train. A day after winning the first title in the team’s brief history, coach Bobby Rodriguez was still excited.

“It was a great feeling, great feeling,” Rodriguez said. “I’m very happy for the boys.”

Thomasville only had to win one game Saturday but lost to East Alabama 7-5. The loss forced a decisive championship game at 9:45 p.m. Saturday. Thomasville trailed 6-1 before clawing back for the victory.

The win capped a thrilling end to the Bombers’ summer. Thomasville won 10 of its last 13 games.

“It was a beautiful thing,” Rodriguez said. “It sort of clicked when we played Gainesville the last series over in Live Oak.

“The bats started swinging. The pitchers started getting a little bit better. They started to gel. We came back with the same lineup again the following game. It produced again and I came back with it again. It produced and I said, ‘You know what. This is it.’”

Area players had a big part in leading Thomasville to the title. Former Cairo shortstop Hugh Russell Lee went 3-for-5 in the title game with two doubles and two RBIs. Thomas University’s Tyler Davis added three hits, including two doubles and one RBI. Rodriguez’s son, Ruben Rodriguez, chipped in with a homer and two runs scored.

Former Brookwood standout Drew Johnson added a hit.

Jonathan Jones notched the win in relief.

Thomasville’s skipper is hopeful this title win will benefit the team in future seasons.

“When we started this program here in Thomasville, the idea was to build it, hopefully get into the playoffs and getting recognized so we could get more kids to come to Thomasville to play,” the Bombers’ skipper added. “It was a great idea when they came up with it. Now, it’s starting to flourish and produce Now that we’ve become GSL champions, it gives us a little bit more responsibility of representing the name at a higher level.”

The summer collegiate team swept a doubleheader from the World of Baseball on Saturday to advance to the Great South League playoffs, which begin on Thursday.

The Bombers advance as a No. 2 seed.

The Bombers’ stout pitching staff was the story in both wins at Varnedoe Stadium on Saturday.

Thomasville won the first game 7-1 before prevailing 2-0 in the second game.

Starting pitchers Tanner Fudge and Jonathan Jones pitched six innings each in their respective starts to earn wins for the Bombers.

“They did a very nice job,” Bombers (11-16) coach Bobby Rodriguez said.

“The hitting came through in the first game.”

Rodriguez’s son, Ruben Rodriguez, highlighted the first game with a solo home run.

He also added an RBI hit in game two that started the scoring for Thomasville. The Bombers added their other run in the second game when Tyler Davis connected with an RBI single in the sixth inning, scoring Brookwood graduate Drew Johnson.

Title: Local player drafted Posted: Thur Jun 11, 2009

THOMASVILLE — On Wednesday, Ryan Stovall added to his lengthy list of contributions to the local baseball scene.

A native of Live Oak, Fla., Stovall became the first Thomas University and Thomasville Bombers player to be drafted. The hard-hitting shortstop was selected in the 19th round of Major League Baseball’s 2009 First-Year Player Draft by the Kansas City Royals. He was the 572nd overall pick.

Stovall, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, posted record-breaking statistics in his lone season at Thomas University. While leading the Night Hawks to a 30-13 mark in 2009, he set single-season standards for batting average (.487), slugging percentage (1.032), hits (76), home runs (20), total bases (161) and stolen bases (14).

In addition to being named the Association of Indepedent Institutions Player of the Year, he earned second-team NAIA All-America status.

“I talked to him briefly. He called me right after he got the call (from the Royals),” Thomas University baseball coach Mike Lee said. “He was still waiting to find out where he might be going and when the guy who signs him will be coming down. He’s excited about it.

“It’ll probably be three or four days before everything gets ironed out and he can go somewhere and start playing ball.”

Lee is almost as thrilled about Wednesday’s development as Stovall.

“He’s a great kid, and I couldn’t be happier for him,” he said. “He did a fantastic job of representing Thomas University and we are pleased he is able to go on and pursue his dream.”

Lee said Stovall was an incredible difference maker for his team.

“Anytime you’ve got a leadoff hitter who can hit the ball out of the park and on-base percentage like he did, it changes the whole lineup,” he explained. “They couldn’t pitch around him and we had some hitters behind him who definitely benefitted from his presence — and, of course, he benefitted by them doing a good job.

“There weren’t too many times that we had him sitting on the bench.”

Lee hopes Stovall’s selection will boost his program.

“It gives the scouts a reason to show up when you’ve had one get drafted,” he said. “Hopefully, they will continue to come around, and anytime you can bring the scouts around you will get the (recruits) who want to be seen. It should help us tremendously.”

Stovall was playing for the Bombers at the time of his selection. They are a Great South League team established in 2007 for college and professional baseball prospects.

Title: Thomasville Bombers and TU Ryan Stovall Drafted Posted: Thur Jun 11, 2009
Thomasville Bombers and TU shortstop Ryan Stovall (Live Oak, FL) was drafted in the 19th round, 572 overall, by the Kansas City Royals Wednesday afternoon in the Major League Baseball First Year draft. This becomes the First Ever Thomasville Bombers (Collegiate Wooden Bat League in Thomasville, GA) and Thomas University Night Hawk to be selected in the MLB Draft.

Stovall was picked up last summer from the Thomasville Bombers team. Coach Bobby Rodriquez is the Head Coach for the Bombers and the TU's assistant coach.

Under Coach Mike Lee at TU, Ryan is coming off a record breaking season and help lead the Night Hawks to a 30-13 record this past season.
